Instagram SEO in 2026: how to write a first line Google can use as your title

· 6 min read

Put the words people search at the start of the caption, say what the post is in roughly the first 50 to 60 characters, and leave greetings, emoji and hashtags for later in the caption.

Why the first line matters most

When Google shows a public Instagram post, the title usually comes from the caption’s first line. It’s also the line people see before “more” in the app. One line does two jobs: it gets the post found, and it gets it read.

Rule 1: start with what people search

Think of the words a customer types when they need what this post shows. Put them first. “Brand strategy coach in Toronto” beats “So today I want to talk about rebrands”, because it matches the search.

  • Use the phrase people use, not your internal name for it.
  • Add a place if your customers are local.
  • Pick one search per post. A post that tries to answer five searches answers none clearly.

Rule 2: fit before the cut-off

Search pages cut long titles with “…”. The limit is measured in width, not characters: on desktop it’s around 600 pixels, which is roughly 50 to 60 characters depending on the letters. Wide letters like W and M use it up faster.

So the part that matters must come first, and the line should make sense even if it’s cut.

Rule 3: plain words, not tags

Greetings, emoji and hashtags in the first line spend the title on things nobody searches. Move hashtags to the end, use a few specific ones rather than broad ones, and keep emoji out of the first line.

Rule 4: keep your voice

A search-friendly line doesn’t have to sound like an advert. Keep your words and your rhythm; just make the point first. Followers benefit too: a clear first line tells them what they’re about to watch.

A 20-second checklist

  1. Would someone search the opening words?
  2. Does the point land before about 55 characters?
  3. No greeting, emoji or hashtag in the first line?
  4. Does it still sound like you?
